Character Information
Character Name(s): Hale Grady Everard
Gender: Male
Race: Half Shapeshifter
Character Age: 33
Date of Birth: November 11, 1974
Physical Description: Hale was always the tall and lanky kid in his class at school. He was 6'4 by the time he was in 7th grade, and it wasn't until his senior year of high school that the rest of his body caught up with his height. He's always been a runner, giving him a lean build and muscular legs, and he also takes good care of his body both for his work and for himself, spending a good amount of his free time in the gym lifting weights. He still runs every morning. His brown hair is cropped short, and his eyes are greenish brown. He tries to remember to shave every morning, but normally winds up forgetting or running out of time, leaving him with a fairly scruffy look most of the time.
Distinguishing marks: Very old and faded scars from open-heart surgeries when he was an infant.
PB: Josh Duhamel
Birth Location: Tacoma, Washington
Personality: Hale is hard by necessity. He's seen things as a cop and detective that have forced him to put aside his naturally sympathetic and kind nature in order to survive and thrive. As a result, he can come off as cold and even uncaring at first glance, but once one takes the time to get to know him, especially if they are in need, he shows his true colors. Hale is a truly passionate person, and though he tries to suppress this side of himself is some situations, it often shows itself. He has a temper that he has problems controlling at times, though he has improved over the years as far as that is concerned.

He has a wonderful sense of humor and likes to have fun--when he has time for it. His job keeps him busy, so his relationships are often strained as a result. He isn't the type of person who believes in using women. He saw that happen to his mother too many times, and believes that they deserve better. He doesn't tend to fall in love easily, but when he does, he falls hard. He tries to be a romantic but fumbles sometimes, is clumsy when in love but tries his hardest.

He's highly intelligent but has a problem with organization. As a result, if he's got more than one thing going at a time, he's usually late to the one that isn't work. He's always punctual and on the ball for anything relating to a case, but often shows up irritatingly late or forgets entirely about other engagements, such as doctors appointments, plans with friends, even dates (though he tries VERY hard not to miss those!).

He throws everything he has into everything he does. While this makes him a good and dedicated detective and friend, it can also lead him to spread himself far too thin. On occasions he has to reevaluate his priorities and get rid of some of his responsibilities.
Personal Background: Hale Everard was born in Tacoma, Washington to 19-year-old Michelle Everard and her husband, 21-year-old Alan Everard. It had been very much a shotgun wedding, as Michelle had been 6 months pregnant at the small wedding, but the couple was very much in love. Things were rough financially for the small family after Hale was born. They lived in a dingy apartment complex in Tacoma. Alan was a third generation police officer and had started out on the force just after graduation, but Hale had health problems as a baby and needed heart surgery a few weeks after his six-weeks premature birth, as well as a second heart surgery after his first birthday. Neither of the young parents' families had approved of the marriage, so support was difficult to come by. Somehow they managed to scrape by, and Hale made it through his first few years. By the time he started kindergarten he was a healthy, intelligent child who, though small, was able to make friends easily. He was extremely sociable, and often got in trouble for talking in class.

When he was six years old, his father was shot in the line of duty during a drug raid. The small family collapsed entirely. His mother was forced to move back home with her parents, who thankfully were forgiving enough to take her and their grandson back in while she got on her feet, taking a job as a secretary at one of the other elementary schools in town. She and Hale were both devastated by Alan’s death. It had been so sudden and so brutal that for the longest time, Hale continued to think that he would come home. It wasn’t until that year at Christmas that he realized that his daddy really was gone. Once things began to return to some semblance of normality, his mother and grandparents began to teach him how to use his power of shapeshifting. She had inherited it from both her parents, and Hale had inherited it from her. For years, he couldn't master it, but that was normal. It wasn't until he was in sixth grade until he was able to shift in control for the first time into a medium sized dog and hold the shape for more than a few seconds. He could sort of flicker in and out of animal shapes before then for a few moments at a time. He continued to practice this with his mother and on his own through the rest of his school career until he was much better at it and could shift into most any animal close to his size.

There were, of course, a few mishaps with this. Michelle and her parents didn’t really think to warn him not to shift in school too loudly because Michelle had been secretive about it on her own. She had never wanted to display it and there had never been any mishaps, so they assumed it would be the same with Hale. In first grade, right after his father’s death, Hale had begun acting out just as any other child would. He and his friends had wandered a bit away from the playground and were playing behind one of the school’s outbuildings. The outbuildings backed up to an alley and there was a line of back yards with chain-link fences. A particularly loud dog, a big pit bull, was barking at the boys, so one of them threw some playground rocks at him. Hale got mad at this and knocked his friend over. The boys got in a fight, but the others broke it up before anyone noticed. Stll unknown to the recess monitor, they continued to watch the dog. Hale decided to show his friends what he was learning at home, and he tried to shift into a dog like the one they were playing with. He succeeded. Terrified, the other boys ran off to get a teacher, but Hale lost the shape almost immediately and ran off. His mother and granparents didn’t really have a hard time explaining it. Children came up with wild stories all the time, and Hale had just run home. Crazy kids. But after that incident they expressed the importance of being discreet about his abilities and not shifting in front of people who weren’t family.

When Hale was eight, his mother began dating again. There was a string of failed relationships. Most of the men ran for it once they realized that Michelle had a son, but after nearly two years of dead-end dating, Michelle met businessman Ethan Smyth. Ethan had been married once before as well, but his wife had not wanted children. That had been what eventually ended their relationship. He was great with Hale, and less than a year after they began dating, Michelle and Ethan were married. A tense moment had occurred when the time came to tell—and show Ethan—that Hale and Michelle were shapeshifters. Since Alan had grown up with Michelle, he had known since they were far younger. She had told him before they were even in high school and he had kept her secret, but Hale was a grown man and was far more likely to either think she was insane and run for the hills or simply run from this family of freaks that he’d almost married into. She told him right after he proposed, and while he took a few days to think about it, and asked her to show him again to make sure he hadn’t been hallucinating, he loved her enough to look past the fact that she had an ability that was a little scary and non-human. Due to Ethan’s job, the pieced-together family picked up and moved to Seattle, into a fairly affluent apartment complex near a decent school. Family dynamics improved dramatically. It wasn’t the same as having his real father around, and for awhile Hale went through the rebellious phase, but eventually he accepted Ethan as “dad’ and developed a very good relationship with the man. He was a great father, the only downside to their relationship being that his job required long hours and frequent business trips. Hale was eleven when Michelle became pregnant with his little sister, and once she was born it felt as if their family was truly complete.

In junior high, it became obvious that his premature birth was not going to keep him small forever. By the eighth grade he had shot up to six foot, lanky as hell. He played basketball and ran cross country in school and made decent grades, all of which carried on into high school. He didn't really have much luck with the ladies, mainly because he was so awkward looking with his long, skinny limbs. He spent the majority of his free time in high school either at after-school practices for sports or studying. He was near the top of his class when graduation came around, and by the time he walked the stage his senior year had grown into his tall frame well. Despite his mother’s protests, he attended the University of Washington to study Criminal Justice so that he could pursue a job as a detective. It had been what his father was working toward when he was killed. He graduated from college in four years and with a fiancée, but they soon broke up when his training with the Seattle Police Department became more time consuming and it became apparent that he wasn’t willing to give up his career for anything, not even the woman he loved.

He went through the usual application process, police training academy and field training before being assigned to patrol work for the obligatory three years. After that he was promoted to the sexual assault/child abuse task force as a detective, and remained on that detail for seven years before he had finally seen too much of that type of crime and couldn’t take any more. He was hard and tough, but there was a point where a person with as much empathy as he had simply had to respect his own limitations and step back. An opening came up in homicide, and he requested a change in department. The request was granted. He has been working with that department for a little over a year now with partner Nox Alekos.

As a detective, his abilities can sometimes work in his favor. Sure, he has to be very careful, but on stakeouts it can occasionally be useful to shift into an (admittedly large) dog and walk around like a common stray. People don’t think dogs are going to overhear them. People don’t think dogs will see them stash a gun.

When the lease ran out on his too-expensive apartment, Hale decided to move into the complex where Nox lived. Rent was cheap, place was nice. So he packed up his bachelor pad and moved it over to a newer place where he might be able to save a little of his salary instead of spending it all on rent for a two-bedroom apartment with amenities he didn’t need. Now he’s settling in, surrounded by other supernaturals for the first time.
Family:
Mother: Michelle Smyth (Full Shapeshifter)
Biological Father: Adam Everard (Human--Deceased)
Stepfather: Ethan Smyth
Half sister: Amelia Smyth (Half-Shapeshifter 22)
Race and Personal Weaknesses: Hale is vulnerable to some human illnesses, and though he does have accelerated healing, he can’t take a bullet and keep going. Since he's only half-shapeshifter, his accellerated healing is even less pronounced. He is incredibly protective of his family and friends, as well as random strangers that appear to be in distress. It has been ingrained in him to be that way from too long on his previous beat, working sex crimes/child abuse. A weakness related to work is that he becomes too personally invested in cases and often becomes too passionate, needs to be forced to step back and look at things objectively.
Magical Abilities: Can shift into animals of similar size and shape, though he cannot hold the form for very long due to the limitations of the race in general, and because he's only half.
Skills and Training: His mother and grandparents shapeshifters as well) taught him how to use his magical powers. He learned how to shoot a gun and how to fight hand-to-hand well in training with the police force. He has a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and a lot of on-the-job experience. He’s a runner, and though he doesn’t have any extra supernatural endurance, he has built up his stamina and strength through constant exercise. Can play basketball well.
